Acekard 2i review

First off, before I start this review I would like to give a special thanks to Lightake.com for supplying me with a sample Acekard 2i !

Nintendo’s third version of the DS hit Japan in November. Sales have been brisk and since the launch of the system it has remained top of the hardware charts, selling faster than hot cakes.  To protect their new baby from homebrew chaps, Nintendo tinkered with the cart detection routine/hardware, so all the current slot 1 flash cards didn’t function. Never one to rest on their laurels, Team Acekard started work in their test lab to find away around this conundrum. After a couple of weeks or so , a video emerged on the tubes, showing a prototype up and running. These guys work fast! No sooner had the shock waves died down than Acekard announced on their web site that a new version of the AK2, imaginatively called the AK2i, would be available for purchase in early December.

I’m very familiar with the AK2, having already reviewed the original and the 2.1 update. Acekard very kindly sent me a AK2i test sample, so I can give it a right good homebrew work out on my newly imported and rather swish DSi.

*disclaimer*

This is just my own broken English opinion of the Flash card. I don’t own an E-shop. I’m not some ebay dropshipper/car boot scally. I’m not a mod on any flash card support site with an agenda to push sales. I’m just average bloke trying crazy stuff from Hong Kong, in the hope that it (A) arrives and (B) works.

Introduction.

What’s inside the box.

The Acekard2i comes in the same clear plastic packaging as the original Ak2. I’m glad they have reverted to this design rather than the cardboard box that contained the AK 2.1 model. This is for a couple of reasons. One; You can see clearly what you are getting, there’s no mystery to the package contents. Two;  the card board logo doubles as a fold out booklet, giving basic but clear instructions on how to get the card up and running. This is a godsend and great for people new to flash cards. The package contains the familiar tackle, a DSi cart and a diddy USB MicroSD reader.

Build quality.

The Acekard 2i comes in a black shell(for the want of a better description). The plastic is an improvement on already solid AK2. The two parts of the shell are not held together by a clip design and not the usual sealed/mini screws. They appear to have been sealed together with glue. This gives a very professional finish. Its not quite commercial cart standard but its getting there. There is a noticeable IC bulge on the label side of the card. Apparently, this is due to a change in the chip make. Not being a hardware wiz kid, I’ll bow to the forum static regarding this matter. The label itself is a very nice shiny holographic type which refracts the light into all the colours of the rainbow. Blue text below the logo states “DSi compatible”.

The card’s “copper teeth” are now protected by raised fins like the default design on all game carts. This is a new improvement over the previous AK2 carts and a very welcome one. Protecting the PCB from greasy mitts will aid the cards longevity. Once again, Acekard is taking feedback from the homebrew community and acting on it.

The PCB is mucky yellow and not black or green as before. The microSD slot is situated in the usual top of the card position. The spring has a positive action and click.  The populated card slot is flush with the top of the shell. The card slipped into my DSi like a normal cart, no catches or stiffness, nice and smooth.

Yet again, Acekard are improving on their hardware design. The quality of the shell has come leaps and bounds from the first run of the Ak2. Getting rid of the clip shell and adding the PCB fins are very good designs choices. If they could go for a springless microSD slot then it would be almost perfect.

Installation.

Using the URL found on the packaging I downloaded the latest version of the OS software from the official web site. The site was easy to navigate and the appropriate link was in the download section. I did the patented” fire up the beast with out any memory card” test and the card booted froze at the blue “loading” text. It didn’t report the usual Ak2.1 “FAT error”. Obviously the card boot procedure has changed on the DSi. I Unzipped the OS file and copied the contents to the root of my 4gig SDHC memory card. No great shakes and painless.

GUI

The DSi now has hot swap cart ability. So even if you forget to insert your flash cart and power up your console, you can still bang it in and fire it up without frying your shiny new handheld.

Booting the Acekard takes about 2 seconds and you are greeted with two icons. The first will take you to your MicroSD card directory and the second will boot the slot-2 in PassMe mode. The second option is obviously redundant with the DSi, as it has no GBA slot. It would be nice to be able to hide this option by editing a config file. Perhaps an OS update will add this feature.

Now onto MicroSD mode. The card auto detects your language/time/date and user name straight from the DS firmware. Very nifty. The top screen displays a real time clock/calender and your name (if the skin supports this feature). Its very well presented and adds a certain polish to the GUI.

The file browser mode comes in two flavours. The first displays four files and their icons, the second is a list view which displays 10 files. Both modes can be navigated by either the touch screen or the buttons+dpad. This is the first implementation of touch screen browsing that I’ve felt comfortable with. All the other slot1 cards either don’t support the feature or are ham fisted attempts at best. The Acekard is silky smooth, so if you like stylus control then this is the bee knees. Scrolling up and down your files is not a case of being pixel perfect with some tiny scroll bar. Simply slide your stylus anywhere up and down on the touch screen and watch the files fly by. The back arrow is situated top left and is very responsive.

A word has to said about the scroll speed in both modes. Its lighting fast and best I’ve encountered up to now, even beating out the stella performance of the EDGE card. Remember I’m running 4gig SDHC card chocka block full of files and heavily fragmented. This is a worse case scenario for GUI’s with issues. Peeps who like to use the dpad wont be disappointed either. You can page forward/back 10 files at a time using left/right. A page taken from the R4 but if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. I’m happy to report no file sorting issues of any kind. In list mode a number prefixes all directories and files, There doesn’t appear to be any file number limit as the root of my SDHC card shows 181 files/directories. I’m sure Centy would have a fit with such a messy set-up. But hey that’s how I roll. I find that most homebrew functions better if the main binary file is located in the root of a memory card. Sometime this a mandatory requirement in order to get some picky games/applications to run.

Also on the bottom screen a start button. Now this isn’t some skin fluff. This is where this card shows its functionality.

Touching the start icon or pressing the DS’s start button brings up the following options.

Copy,Cut,Delete,Paste: Do what you would expect them to do on the highlighted file. Very nice, no need for DSorganise or your PC to carry out basic file browser commands.

Patches: Brings up a sub menu where you can enable/disable download play, cheats and soft-reset for the highlighted file.

System Options: Brings up the erm.. system option menu where you can change the following.

Interface theme (skins): Select skins from the 3 that come with the default OS. To enable them the menu executes a soft reset and requires confirmation before doing so. Pretty painless. Apparently you can have up to 25 skins loaded which should be more than enough for most people.

Interface language: Acekard 2 supports English, Simple Chinese, Traditional Chinese,Japanese,French, Italian,German,Spanish

Brightness: 1-4 levels [this option currently doesn't work on the DSi]

Show file(s) of type: NDS, NDS+SAV, ALL

Trim Rom When Copying: Disable/enable

All the above bring up a confirmation box before the system change is executed. Which is cool if you are blindly stumbling round the options due to lack of documentation.

Properties: Displays the properties of the highlighted file/directory/device. This is very cool if you select the root MicroSD card Icon. It gives you the following readout. if for example you have a 4gig card.

Disk capacity: 3.75 GB
Used space: 3.66 GB
Space: 84.34 MB

This is a great feature as you don’t have take your memory card out of its slot, in order to gauge how much space you have left on it.

Executing the same command on a file and you get the following example.

Palib Demo
using PAlib
ColossalCaveAdventure.nds
Last change 2008/3/10 08:00:18(GMT)
File size: 859.56KB
Save type: Unknown/Auto

Very comprehensive, Acekard have now set the standard for future devices to follow.

Help: brings up the GUI button control guide

d-pad: Up/Down/PG Up/PG Down
A: yes/Start/Ok
B: No/Back/Cancel
Y: View file info/select save type
X: Cheats
Left trigger: Back to parent directory
Right trigger: Set brightness 1/2/3/4
Start: Open “Start” menu
Select: List style: Animate/number

It also show the OS Build/hardware revision?

AKMENU 4.12 AK2 HW:44

Note the hardware change from 80 to 44 when using a DSi

So to sum up the GUI functionality on the AK2i, It behaves exactly like the AK2 version. This is to be expected since it’s the same software. But..operating on the DSi. I encountered no glitches or freezes during my time testing the many homebrew applications and games. The only minor blemish is the Passme/Slot 2 option on startup. Hopefully this can be rectified in a software update.

Multimedia

AK2i has built in media capability from the file browser via plugins. Selecting a MP3 fires up the Ipod-esk LMP-ng, you can boot back to the menu via the start button. Text file support is via Bliss’s Text viewer. Pressing select, brings you back to the main menu.

If you want more options then Moonshell Media player is the go to application for all your media needs. You can find a pre patched 1.71 version in the download section of the Acekard site. It works well and DPG movies look great on the big DSI screens. I tested a few MP3s and txt files, they all played/displayed as intended. Booting back to the AK2i menu using the soft-reset function worked as expected.

Backwards compatibility.

I tested the AK2i on my battered DS Phat and it performed just like a regular AK2/AK2.1 card, which is cool. Obviously this means that you can use all the built in Passme/Slot2/EZ3in1 Functionality of the card. So homebrew like Quake2 and GBA Exploader can be run.

Homebrew Testing.

Just like many of the recent cards I have reviewed, the Acekard 2i has built in AUTO-DLDI patching which should in theory make for painless homebrew fun. Lets see how it copes which a vigorous work out with apps, games old and new.

Test system

DS [flashme 0.7 firmware]
DSi [Japan] [firmware 1.00]
Acekard 2i Slot 1 card
Acekard 2 OS Version 4.12

Acekard MicroSD USB reader
Kingston [Japan] 4gig class 4 MicroSDHC
Sandisk 2gig MicroSD
Kingston [Japan] 1gig MicroSD

Emulators and homebrew that display the current DLDI driver, report the AK2i as “RPGS”.

I interrogated the actual Acekard2i card for info using Rudolph’s slot 1 backup tool 0.31 and it came back with the following result.
I used my DS phat to run this test as the DSi is sans slot 2.

Code: ACEKARD2I ACEK 00
Chip ID: C2 0F 00 00
Rom SIZE(used): 0.12MB(0.129MB)
Save Type: 0 (not provided)
Rather than the usual massive shopping list of compatible homebrew, I’ve split them into manageable chunks via genres, which I find makes the whole list a lot easier to read.

All the following work and boot up. Obviously there are some apps/games I have tested more rigorously than others.

Rise Of the Triad

I have shortened the application list down to the ones I use on regular basis. I’ve probably missed quite a few apps/games. If any forum member wants a specific homebrew tested then give us a shout and I’ll gladly report my findings.

Homebrew Wifi.

I tested Still Alive in order to check that the homebrew WIFI hasn’t been broken when using a DSi. I’m happy to report that I had no troubles connecting to my WIFI router and downloading a couple of maps from the many hundreds stored on the Still Alive server.

Yet again the only game I had trouble running was DSCent, which crashed halfway through the intro cut scene.
The AK2i performs exactly like the AK2 in term of homebrew compatibility. This gives the user a vast array of games/application to run on their new DSi console.

Pros.

First DSi compatible slot 1 card
Excellent hardware quality
SDHC support.
Snazzy label.
Uber FAST skinable GUI.
Powerful GUI functionality.
Frequent OS updates. [so far..]
Very good homebrew compatibility.
Fast communication with Team Acekard.
Excellent official website uptime and stable OS file downloads
Official support forums.
DS/DSL compatible, with added Slot 2 functionality

Cons.

No brightness settings [none issue, Press select+volume to alter settings on the fly]
OS Software shows legacy slot 2 functions

Summary.

The AK2.1 is a solid card. Its a fast, highly compatible homebrew card. When Nintendo released the DSi and made all the current slot 1 cards inoperable on this fantastic new hardware, I thought the game was up for the future of homebrew. But in less than a month Team Acekard have conjured up the impossible, with the announcement and subsequent release of the AK2i. This has unlocked the true power of DSi, with its brighter/bigger screens and louder speakers than found on the previous lite model. Classic games which use primary colours and chip tune soundtracks, really come to life on the DSi in tandem with a Ak2i.

The future of DSi homebrew may be uncertain as Nintendo has the ability to force firmware upgrades. I’m sure they will be some bumps in the road ahead. But for now, we can enjoy the massive library of classic and modern homebrew games/applications, on the best handheld currently available. Well done to team Acekard for making this a reality.
