Pinball machine collectors – how do you maintain your machines?
Do you prefer to mothball them and never use them, or do you keep them on? Do you use a gadget to ensure free plays, or keep the traditional coin-op system in use? Would you ever consider repainting the side decals?

Neither. What’s the point in collecting an item that was meant to be played with and then just letting it sit idle? Besides, they work better when played occasionally, just like any mechanical device; leave them untouched for a long time and the mechanisms stop working smoothly. And keeping them on…uh, no. Only if I owned an electric company! They’re on when I’m playing, and off when I’m not.

Leave them requiring coins. Makes a great piggy-bank that way. If you have a bunch of pinball rookies coming over, you can always change the replay scores to the lowest possible setting, which should keep it from requiring more coins.
“Would you ever consider repainting the side decals?”
Only if they were in very poor condition. Then I’d go hunting for replacements instead of repainting; only if I couldn’t find a replacement would I go for repainting (and you’d better strip-off the worn decals first). Note that only some games use decals at all, and that’s a relatively recent thing.
