installing an aftermarket Cd player in a 2000 sunfire?
I am looking into putting an aftermarket CD player in my 2000 Sunfire, however i have been told that i need a special wireing harness and there is also something to do with the air bag… Can anyone please inform me a little better and let me know if I was being scammed by the radio place. PLease
Your Sunfire is equipped with GM’s class 2 data bus. In this car, the radio is tied into the vehicle’s computer system and controls some of the vehicle functions. The main function you’ll notice is the warning chime system; any audible warning chime (door chime, lights left on, etc) is generated by the factory radio and plays through your driver’s door speaker. In addition, the radio power on/off is controlled by the vehicle computer through the data bus wire, instead of using a switched accessory power wire in the radio harness like most vehicles.
Here’s what this means:
You can replace the radio without using an adapter module. However, if you do this, you’ll lose all audible warning chimes in the vehicle. Also, because there’s no switched power wire in the factory radio plug, you’ll have to run a wire from the after-market CD player to key-switched power source somewhere else in the vehicle, like the fuse box or ignition harness.
If you use the expensive adapter, it will decode the data bus signal and generate your vehicle’s warning chimes. It will also have an accessory power output which can be used with your new head unit, making installation much easier.
The SRS airbag system will NOT be affected by removing the factory radio, whether you use the expensive adapter or not. Don’t worry about the airbags. You just have to decide whether it’s worth spending the extra money to keep your warning chimes, make the installation easier, and keep the “retained accessory power” feature (this is what keeps your radio working after you turn the key off, until you open a door).
